Shooting to Make It: The Power of Intention in Sports and Life

In the world of sports, the mindset we bring to the game can often determine our success. As a performance physical therapist who works with active adults and athletes of all abilities, I've witnessed the profound impact that mental fortitude can have on athletic performance. Inspired by a story I read recently shared by James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, I want to delve into the concept of "shooting to make it" and explore the significance of intentionality in both sports and life.

The story that inspired me was about a boy and his dad and the love of a game.  Growing up basketball was more than just a game for him—it was a bonding experience with his dad. Dad wasn't just his coach; he was a mentor who instilled in his son a valuable lesson: "shoot to make it." This simple yet powerful mantra carried a profound meaning that extends far beyond the basketball court.

The essence of "shoot to make it" lies in intentionality. In basketball, there are moments when we take shots almost instinctively, hoping they'll land in the hoop. However, this young man’s father's advice encourages a shift in mindset. Whether on the court or in life, we should approach our actions with purpose and determination. Every shot we take, metaphorically or literally, should be aimed at success.

Applying this philosophy to decision-making and actions, I find myself reflecting on my choices, evaluating whether I am truly "shooting to make it." It's about more than just taking a shot—it's about taking a good shot, one with the intention of success. This mindset brings focus, resilience, and a commitment to excellence.

As athletes, we encounter numerous challenges, both on and off the field. The mental fortitude to "shoot to make it" can be a game-changer. This mindset instills a sense of purpose, encouraging us to approach every opportunity with intention and dedication. In our work with Peak Performance athletes, I've seen the transformative power of this mindset.

It's important for each of us working toward a goal or competing in an event or in a pickup game at the Y, to further explore the concept of "shooting to make it." Delve into practical strategies to cultivate mental fortitude, enhance performance, and apply this mindset beyond sports. Stay tuned for insights that will empower you to bring intentionality into your athletic journey and beyond. If you're eager to learn more or discuss how this mindset can benefit you personally, feel free to reach out. Let's shoot for success together!
